Dougie Rapps with Doug Rappoport

Bart Allmand January 13, 2021

Listen in as Bart talks with Doug Rappoport in this week’s episode. Doug shares about his background, his love of music, and how he started working with Edgar Winter. He also tells of his one regret in his music career.

T&D Blog Featured Image (9).png

Meet Doug Rappoport: Doug Rappoport is a British born, American-raised guitar player. His style is deeply rooted in the Blues while utilizing a more modern hard Rock tone and approach.

His guitar playing skill sets and knowledge base are being compared to legends from Jimi Hendrix and Eric Clapton to Eric Johnson and Eddie Van Halen.

Doug's rapidly growing popularity is attributed to a blend of modern guitar techniques combined with classic phrasing and melodic sensibilities harkening back to the masters, all rolled into a unique style that is unmistakably his own.

Touring extensively with Edgar Winter for 11 years as well as guitar legend Rick Derringer plus sharing stage and studio with a who’s who of renowned artists, he has honed aggressive chops, confident stage presence, and overall pro savvy through substantial road experience.

“I've been lucky enough to tour all over the world, and I'm often asked what my favorite venue is:  my favorite venue thus far is The Royal Albert Hall in London, England. As a huge Classic Rock fan, the significance of playing on that stage was not lost on me!”

An in-demand session guitarist; Doug’s work is featured in many national television and radio commercials. Notable spots include clients such as Ford, Metro PCS (exclusively featuring Doug’s guitar playing), and ORCAN. Plus, he’s been a stand out guitarist on “American Idol”, and his playing can be heard in numerous films and film trailers. Many recording sessions are produced in his home studio, especially for guest appearances on albums and cues for TV spots such as “NCIS Miami”.

A state-of-the-art home recording studio enables Doug to deliver the highest quality audio, tones and masterful guitar work for any type of project. Contact Doug here to inquire about recordings for your project!

Doug’s recording career also includes solo endeavors. His first solo album release “BIONIC”, features a hard-rocking rendition of the Edgar Winter classic, “Dying To Live”-- and a blistering version of the Jimi Hendrix classic “Voodoo Chile (SR)”. The album likewise showcases several originals complete with instrumentals and vocal arrangements. All instruments, engineering, producing, mixing, and mastering were completed by Doug in his home studio (except for drums, provided by the incredible Chris Frazier, and the inimitable Jimmy Paxson on "Voodoo Rapps").

BIONIC is available through iTunes, and many other online music retail outlets. He continues to compose, arrange, and record solo material.

Additionally, Doug is a former faculty member of Hollywood’s world-famous Musician’s Institute - Guitar Institute of Technology (MI/GIT).  He now provides private lessons, including Skype sessions for students outside the Los Angeles area. Spaces are typically full, but please inquire about the availability of upcoming slots.

Doug currently lives in L.A. and performs with his solo band, The Doug Rappoport Band.  Stay in touch with Doug on Facebook and other social media for upcoming Doug Rappoport Band- tour dates.

What Bart has to say: Doug is one of the best at doing gear demonstrations (‘demos’).  He’s one of the most creative people out there doing that these days. This interview was the first time meeting Doug and I couldn’t have been more pleasantly surprised at how open and nice he was!

In this episode, you’ll hear

  • Doug was born in South Africa, grew up in England, and settled in Southern California.

  • Doug plays in the Edgar Winter Band all over the world, so he discussed how Covid has changed touring.

The Seattle Smile with Jimmy Ritchey

Bart Allmand December 2, 2020

This week on Thinkin’ & Drinkin’ Bart talks with Jimmy Ritchey. Jimmy comes on and shares about his path to Nashville. Jimmy has done it all - songwriting, sessions player, producing records, publishing company and artist manager. Listen in for great stories and lots of laughs.

T&D PINTEREST (1).png

Meet Jimmy Ritchey: Jimmy Ritchey is an American country music songwriter and record producer from Centralia, Washington. The variety of Jimmy Ritchey's music-industry contributions is as impressive as the speed with which he has accomplished them. In the span of just over a decade, he has co-written four top-10 hits, produced albums for more than 10 artists, played on dozens of recording sessions, and created his own song-publishing company. He has also toured coast-to-coast as a road musician.

Ritchey's career took hold shortly after his move to Nashville in 1995 with the goal of using his talent to take him on the road in tour buses and into recording studios. Within months of arriving, he was hired to go on the road with Ronna Reeves followed by a stint with Kid Lonesome. This led to an introduction to singer Tommy Shane Steiner and eventually the opportunity to produce Steiner's album with RCA. The record label initially wanted producers Paul Worley and Frank Liddell to produce the album, but after encouragement from both, agreed to allow Ritchey to produce it

In 2010, Ritchey opened Vibe Room Music, a collaborative venture with the late publishing veteran Jeff Carlton and several talented songwriters, including country stars Sam Hunt and Pam Tillis

Ritchey co-wrote several songs that have charted on Hot Country Songs

  • I'm a Saint (Mark Chesnutt)

  • I Gotta Get to You (George Strait)

  • Twang (George Strait)

  • Something About a Woman (Jake Owen)

  • Don't Think I Can't Love You (Jake Owen)

  • Startin' with Me (Jake Owen)

  • The One That Got Away (Jake Owen)

He signed an exclusive agreement with BMG Chrysalis on December 3, 2012.  Ritchey has had over 40 songs recorded by major-label artists.  As a record producer, he has worked with Owen, Chesnutt, Greg Bates, and Clay Walker.

Ritchey is currently managing emerging Sony country artist Robert Counts and recently returned from a tour in Germany. He also performed with Ellinor Springstrike in the 2019 "An American Christmas" held in Umea, Sweden. He was recently honored to be named 2020 Distinguished Alumnus by the Centralia College Foundation.

What Bart has to say: Jimmy has done everything from producing records to playing in bands to picking me up at the airport after my grandpa passed away.  He’s a very serious and intense guy who never takes himself too seriously.

In this episode, you’ll hear:

  • How Jimmy went from being a country sideman/car salesman to moving to Nashville at 25

  • Jimmy discussed starting a publishing company (with his first writer signed by Sam Hunt) to what it’s like being a producer and now manager to Robert Counts

Tune it to hear the joy in their voices as they reminisce, you won't want to miss it!

T&D PINTEREST.png

Meet Danny Myrick: Danny Myrick achieved his first No. 1 in gospel music as a writer at age 17 before moving to Nashville and spent much of the 1990s singing lead in the band Western Flyer before pursuing writing full force. He’s the co-writer of hits like “She’s Country,” “I Love This Life,” and “International Harvester,” among others.  He is currently writing for Deluge Music.

Meet Kip Raines: Not long after moving to Nashville from the mountains of Northeast Georgia, Kip Raines learned that his high school jazz band would be making an album with Johnny Cash. “The first recording studio I ever walked into was RCA Studio B. Everyone kept whispering that Elvis recorded ‘It’s Now or Never’ in that room. It was a magical thing for a kid…I guess I was hooked.”

Kip credits his early drumming experiences with his love for songwriting. “I was always fortunate to play with great singers who were singing great songs. Wynonna was a great influence. What a singer! If you’re really listening, you can’t help but learn.” He would go on to play drums on Blackhawk’s self-titled multi-platinum album (including the hits “Every Once in a While” and “Sure Can Smell the Rain”),  and sing on gold albums by Steven Curtis Chapman (The Great Adventure) and Keith Anderson (Three Chord Country and American Rock n’ Roll), as well as numerous others.

While writing for Warner/Chappell, his first single, “One of These Days (I’m Gonna Love Me),” became a #1 for Tim McGraw. In 2003, he signed with Windswept Pacific Music and over the next four years, penned songs for Clay Walker, American Idol artist Bucky Covington, and the brother duo from Lynyrd Skynyrd, Van Zant. “Help Somebody If You Can,” won a BMI Award as one of the 50 most-played songs of 2006.

In 2007 Kip took a break from the music business to write two books: a fiction novel called The Ink Stain and a non-fiction book The Message in the Mirror based on his own life experiences. He returned to songwriting full time in 2010.

Jeffrey Steele: A five-time Grammy Nominee, Jeffrey Steele has been recognized by BMI for over 63 million airplays for hits he penned for a multitude of artists including Keith Urban, Eric Church, Zac Brown Band, Jimmy Buffett, Montgomery Gentry, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Cher, .38 Special, Faith Hill, Tim McGraw, Trace Adkins, LeAnn Rimes, Rascal Flatts and Van Zant, Joe Cocker, Little Feat ft. Bob Seger, Joe Bonamassa, Cascada and more.

CMA has twice awarded him the coveted “Triple Play Award” for three No. 1 songs in a year. His country and A/C mega-hits include a string of chart-toppers including: “Raise ‘Em Up”, “Knee Deep”, “Here,” “My Wish,” “The Cowboy In Me,” “These Days”, “My Town”, “Something to be Proud of”, “Everyday” and the groundbreaking “What Hurts The Most,” nominated for Best Country Song at the Grammy Awards.

Additionally, he has won over 35 BMI Country and Pop awards, was nominated for a Golden Globe and Critic’s Choice Award for Best Original Song “I Thought I Lost You” for the Disney/Pixar animated feature BOLT, performed by Miley Cyrus and John Travolta, been named one of Billboard Magazine’s top 5 writer’s 8 years in a row, as well as Music Row Magazine’s Songwriter of the Year Award. Steele’s latest album features performances with Vince Gill, Emmylou Harris, Jamey Johnson, John Rich and others.

What Bart has to say: I love what Jeffrey has to say about how it took 16 years for our song to be recorded….’these songs are like fine wine and just get better with age.”  It was a blast to be able to have all 4 of us on the podcast at once.

What Bart has to say: It was a huge surprise to find out a few weeks that Trace Adkins had cut a song that I wrote 16 years ago with Danny Myrick, Kip Raines & Jeffrey Steele when I was writing for Jeffrey’s publishing company, 3 Ring Circus.   Those writing days were some of the most fun days of my career, so Amy had the idea to do a little zoom reunion of the guys for the podcast and it was a blast, so much so that we did it in two parts.

In this episode, you’ll hear

  • Bart, Danny & Kip talk about their 16-year-old song “Just The Way We Do It’ being recorded and released recently by Trace Adkins

  • How the four of them (including Jeffrey Steele) hadn’t been in the same room for 13 or more years and when they did get together they would start about 8 or 9 songs and finish 3 or 4.

The Smilin’ Assassin’ with Adam Shoenfeld

Bart Allmand August 19, 2020

This week's episode of Thinkin’ and Drinkin’ is with Adam Shoenfeld. Adam talks of his guitar playing days before and currently with Tim Mcgraw. He also shares what it was like working with Big & Rich. Tune in to hear the life of Adam Shoenfeld!

T&D PINTEREST.png

Meet Adam Shoenfeld: Born in Huntington, NY, and raised in Blairstown, NJ, Shoenfeld moved to Nashville after graduating high school, where he worked as a house musician at Woodland Studios. While working in the studio, Shoenfeld also performed with many different artists in Nashville and was introduced to Hollywood Records recording artist "Big Kenny" Alphin.

After a brief period of touring in support of Big Kenny’s solo effort Live a Little, they formed the rock band luvjOi, and it was during this time that Shoenfeld met singer-songwriter John Rich.

Simultaneously, the MuzikMafia was born, a music and art collective in which Shoenfeld was a longstanding member and also included Jon Nicholson, Gretchen Wilson, Cowboy Troy, and others

Rich began using Shoenfeld as a frequent guitarist in the recording studio, playing on demos of songs like "Redneck Woman" and "Hicktown" (penned by Rich and later recorded by Wilson and Aldean, respectively).

After Luvjoi disbanded, the country duo Big & Rich was formed by Alphin and Rich and signed to Warner Bros. Records in 2004.

Shoenfeld was invited to take part in the recording of the duo’s debut album Horse of a Different Color, which reached the top of the Billboard Country Albums Chart and featured Shoenfeld’s guitar playing on the multi-platinum hit, "Save a Horse (Ride a Cowboy)," a fusion of country, rock, and rap. He not only has played on every Big & Rich album to date but is a co-author on the songs "Real World," "High Five," "When the Devil Gets the Best of Me," and "M-E-D-L-E-Y of the Hillbilly Jedi."

Shoenfeld toured with Big & Rich in 2005, 2006, 2007, and 2009, and while working with Big & Rich also accepted a spot in Jason Aldean’s band to perform at record label showcases. He continued to work with Aldean thereafter, and on Aldean’s self-titled debut album Shoenfeld performed the guitar part on "Hicktown," a Top 10 radio hit and platinum-certified track noted for its heavy, hard-rock style guitars

Since then, Shoenfeld has played lead guitar on every Aldean release to date and is also co-author of the song "Laid Back," featured on Aldean’s Old Boots, New Dirt album.

The edgy sound made popular in part by Aldean and Big & Rich made Shoenfeld an in-demand session musician, and he has gone on to play guitar on over 200 albums for artists such as Luke Bryan, Keith Urban, Blake Shelton, Florida Georgia Line, Jake Owen, Thomas Rhett, Alabama, Tim McGraw, Lee Brice, Rascal Flatts and many more

In 2012, Shoenfeld joined country superstar Tim McGraw’s touring band, and currently tours with McGraw while also maintaining his recording career.

What Bart has to say: Adam is a great guitar player and I knew he would have great stories.  I love writing with him and he ended being the best-dressed guest so far….

In this episode, you’ll hear

  • Adam is the typical guitar player in a band, looking for stardom, blindsided, then landing with one of the biggest artists in country music, Tim McGraw

  • Talked about Music Mafia and what it was like working with Big & Rich before they were Big & Rich

Orange County Thunder with Jeremy Popoff

Bart Allmand August 12, 2020

On this episode of Thinkin’ & Drinkin’ Bart talks with Jeremy Popoff. Jeremy is a writer, producer and musician whose work has paid off throughout the years. He is a part of the band Lit and has recently made a record with his brother AJ. Learn more about Jeremy by tuning into today's episode! You won't be disappointed!

T&D PINTEREST.png

Meet Jeremy Popoff of Lit: & the Popoff Brothers: The Popoff Brothers are Ajay Popoff (lead vocals) and Jeremy Popoff (lead guitar), founding members of the still-active rock band Lit.

After helping define an entire generation of SoCal power punk with hard-charging hits like “My Own Worst Enemy,” “Zip-Lock,” “Over My Head” and “Miserable,” the laid-back country spirit behind Popoff Brothers might seem like a drastic left turn from their multi-platinum status as co-founders of their rock band, Lit.  But to the brothers, their latest Nashville-inspired progression is just as natural as the changing of the seasons.

Ajay and Jeremy Popoff, have actually been crafting songs in the Nashville tradition their whole career – right back to their Platinum-certified 1999 breakout, A Place In the Sun. Real-life experience and skillful wordplay, authenticity and self-made sonics, hard-working independence, and unflinching loyalty to each other, all of these are bedrock country values … and bedrock Lit values. Besides, they’ve never been ones to do the expected.

“We didn’t get into a rock band to follow rules,” says Jeremy. “If we wanted to follow rules and live in a box, starting a band would not have been the chosen path. We’re making music for ourselves first and foremost.”

Indeed. Despite a rockstar history that begins in an Anaheim, California High School in 1988, the brothers’ creative core has roots all over the stylistic map – and at this point in their lives, the country influence is starting to show. Growing up, the Popoff’s father was a DJ on top 40 radio at a time when genre lines were fluid, a foreshadowing of today’s online-streaming culture. Because of his eclectic, unruly record collection, they cut their teeth on the songs of Glen Campbell and Van Halen alike.

Leaning into that anything-goes mindset, the Popoff Brothers have been frequenting and living in Nashville for nearly 15 years, soaking in a creative community and sense of camaraderie they’d never experienced before – even at the height of their chart-topping, globe-trotting popularity. “It was a rebirth of wanting to write music again,” says lead vocalist A. Jay. They penned heartfelt tracks with country artists like Jamey Johnson, Colt Ford, Parmalee, and Cole Swindell, and shared stages with hitmakers like Dustin Lynch, Chase Rice, and Randy Houser, all the while learning how much their own music impacted today’s genre-busting stars. So when it came time to record a new batch of tunes, they knew exactly where to turn.

“We didn’t set out one day to be Country artists,” Jeremy explains. “We just love writing songs and we spend a lot of time in Nashville, and the way we write today is much different than it was 20 years ago. When we sit down to write a song now, it’s usually during the day with acoustic guitars, not in a sweaty warehouse in Anaheim, plugged in at full volume and drinking beer in the middle of the night.”

“We put out a Lit album in 2017 that was very Country leaning,” explains Ajay.  “I think it was maybe some of our best stuff ever, but we kind of realized that it might have been confusing to some of our hardcore fans and the industry alike.  So we decided that putting out music as Popoff Brothers could give us an outlet for songs that we write that might not jive with the Lit brand.”

The first release from Popoff Brothers is “Sons And Daughters Of Summer”, a nostalgic, feel-good look back on the innocence of summer vacation and how much the world really has in common.  The song was co-written by the brothers, Kenton Bryant and Jonathan Singleton (Luke Combs, Tim McGraw, Rascal Flatts). "Kenton came in with this idea and we all loved it," says Jeremy.  "When Ajay and I were kids growing up in Southern California, we never went on family vacations.  We just went to the beach or the river and ran around with whatever kids were there doing the same thing.  It was such an innocent time and yet was probably the first time we made out with a girl, snuck a cigarette or stole a beer from our dad."

Ajay and Jeremy plan to release more Popoff Brothers songs this year and are also working on new Lit music, which A.Jay describes as “old school Lit.” He adds, “Our personal playlists don’t have only one genre of music, and I don’t think our fans listen to music that way either.  Separating the music of Lit and Popoff Brothers will just give our fans more diversity all while allowing us the creative freedom to write whatever we’re feeling at the moment.  We’re also excited to take the Popoff Brothers on the road.  The heart of what we do and why we do it is that performing live is pretty much all we know. We create music that we want to hear and put it out there on a stage with our entire heart and soul!”

What Bart has to say: I just love Jeremy.  Love his writing.  He’s a super sweet, fun dude and have always enjoyed writing with him!  I remember seeing Lit open for No Doubt back in the day and I knew they were going to be one of the biggest rock bands of the time.  They looked serious but still like they were just having a ball.

  • How a punk/alt-rock/rock/pop band ended up in the land of Country & Western music
